Location 

Roxby Downs is 570 kms North west of Adelaide South Australia, the Region is known as the Far North.

The purpose-built township of Roxby Downs is 16 kilometres due south of the Olympic Dam Mine Operations, owned by BHP Billiton.

Population 

The Olympic Dam mine and town have grown rapidly since 1988. In 1996 a major expansion increased the town’s size from 2,700. By the time of the 2006 Census the resident population had grown to 4,054. Latest estimates indicate that the population is around 4,500. A further 900 people work at the mine on a fly/drive in and out basis.

The town has a high turnover of population with people staying around 3 to 5 years before moving on. This reflected in statistics from the last Census which recorded that 28% of the population arrived in the last year and 57% of the population did not live in Roxby Downs 5 years ago. There are also many long term residents who arrived in 1988 and have stayed on. Their children are now adults and many have stayed on to raise their own children. This has created for the first time a 3rd generation of residents.

The median (average age) of residents is 29.6 years which is the second lowest median age for a local government area in the State. There are 34 different nationalities resident in Roxby Downs including people from New Zealand, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Fiji, Indonesia, Kenya, Russia, Poland, India, Chile, Mozambique, Nigeria, Romania, Philippines, Egypt and Argentina.

 

Retail Expenditure 

Although the number of retail outlets is relatively small most essential goods and services are covered including men’s and women's clothing, newsagency, pharmacy, gifts, jewellery, hairdressers, hardware, furniture and electrical, plants and gardening, auto accessories, video store, photo processing, toys and a Woolworths supermarket. There are 4 takeaway food outlets.
